 Today, I am pleased to present author Karin Wooten as my guest. Karin is an author and disciple of God’s Word.
Karin, thank you for being her with us today! Thank you for inviting me, Carol. It’s a pleasure to be here. Karin, tell us a little bit about yourself … Where do you live and what do you do besides write? I am a wife, mother, and grandmother, living in Western North Carolina with my husband and our son. My greatest passion in life, besides writing, is helping other women grow in the Word of God through the process of discipleship. I enjoy reading, quilting/sewing, crafting, puzzles, and visiting my daughters and grandchildren in Florida. How did your love for writing grow? Since childhood, I've had a love relationship with pen and paper, scribbling on everything and always striving to improve my penmanship. That love combined with the need for money after marriage began my desire to submit stories and articles. I also began journaling, writing skits for church, and eventually, speeches for women's meetings. Your story titles are very original. What is the influence behind them? My first published book was Don't Tap Dance in the Shower. It is a collection of true stories of my life, sometimes ridiculous events, and each story contains a spiritual lesson that I learned. I've always admired Erma Bombeck's style of wit and self-deprecation, and I think that influenced my writing. I figured if the story titles were interesting, it would hook the reader, as evidenced by I Haven't Had a Shower Since Paris and Call the Waahhhmbulance. My goal was to introduce God in people's lives, and hopefully encourage them through the scripture I used in my own circumstances. What is up next for Karin Wooten? I am close to finishing my second book -- more true stories, but with more depth biblically. It is entitled, Vulcan Dirt Diving Through Life: Falling, Failing, and Faith. We all fall and fail in our life, but how can we get up again and keep going? God's Word provides all we need. I get so much joy out of sharing my experiences and what God has taught me through them. And what advice do you have for beginning writers? I suggest beginning writers start writing every day in a journal, preferably one that is cute or pretty; it's easier to pick it up and use it if you like the cover. (Probably doesn't apply if you're a man.) Or use your computer. Start by writing daily events, funny stories, any epiphanies, ideas for a story, descriptions of unusual people... just get in the habit of putting words down. Secondly, become very conscious of your spelling and study your grammar books! Thirdly, join a group of other writers.
